In the period from August 2020 to December 2022, the Institute of Forestry of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus conducted research on the technology of production and application of peat-sapropel substrate for growing forest planting material.

The research was planned and conducted by Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor, Professor Vladimir Vasilyevich Kopytkov.

In 2021, the first experimental batches of products were delivered to the State Forestry Institution "Brest Forestry" and the State Forestry Institution "Kobrin Experimental Forestry". Thanks to the work carried out, the technology of obtaining new substrates was developed, the proportions of the necessary ingredients were determined, the germination of seeds in the soil was increased and the degree of maturity of composts was reduced.

"Organomineral substrate "Fertiriz" for growing seedlings of forest species".
The peat-sapropel mixture (substrate) is saturated with humic substances and amino acids, which ensure rooting, growth and development of the seedlings. The low ash content ensures an optimum ratio of oxygen and hydrogen in the substrate. Lowland peat and sapropel contain humic acids of different composition which, through the formation of organomineral complexes, fix nitrogen and potassium in the exchangeable form, reducing their mobility, and convert phosphorus into a form easily extractable by plants. Nutrients are assimilated by 86-90% when using peat-sapropel mixture (substrate).

An important result of the scientific research was the invention of a unique compost formula for forestry and agriculture, consisting of tree bark, peat, chicken manure, mushroom waste, sapropel and water. The ratio of these components in the compost, wt %:

  • tree bark — 1.5-5;
  • peat — 0,5-1,5;
  • chicken manure — 2-3;
  • waste from mushroom production — 1-3;
  • sapropel — 2-4;
  • water — the rest

Research results on compost formulations

This reduced compost readiness by 40-50 days and increased soil seed germination by 45-55%.
Patent No. 23822 "Composition for the production of compost based on tree bark"
Patent No. 23822 "Composition for obtaining compost on the basis of tree bark" was obtained for the invention on 30.10.2022, issued by the State Institution "National Centre of Intellectual Property".
The technical objective of the patent — to increase the germination of conifer seeds in the ground and reduce the degree of compostability - is achieved by incorporating sapropel and mushroom production waste into the compost composition.
