Sapropel is the centuries-old bottom sediments of freshwater reservoirs, which were formed from dead aquatic vegetation, remains of living organisms, plankton, also particles of soil humus, containing large amounts of organic substances, humus: lignin-humus complex, carbohydrates, bitumen and others in colloidal state.
The chemical composition of sapropels varies greatly depending on the reservoir in which it was formed.
In general, all sapropels are a composition of 3 main components:
- biologically active;
- organic;
- mineral.
Depending on their share in the finished product, chemists distinguish 4 types of sapropels according to the predominant component in the composition:
- carbonate;
- glandular;
- siliceous;
- organic.

According to the supplementary exploration and assessment of mineral reserves (abstract to the report on supplementary exploration) carried out in 2017 by the State Scientific Institution "Institute of Nature Management of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus" on the Mlynok-2 site of the Udhovda deposit there are reserves of organic and siliceous type sapropel in the amount of 106.93 thousand tons (at conditional moisture of 60%) or in the volume of 198.73 thousand m³.

In the chemical analysis of the sapropel composition from 2019 (item 4), there is a "Moisture" parameter equal to 78.95% (sample # 3290) and 77.01% (sample # 3291). This is the total (natural) moisture of the raw material extracted at the site. Total moisture includes free and bound moisture.
Bound moisture is associated water, firmly bound to the various components of sapropel by chemical and physical bonds. The greater the amount of organic matter in the sapropel, the higher its bound moisture.

After thermal processing at the equipment of ALC "AGROSEMPRODUCT" total moisture of sapropel can be lowered to 40-50%, depending on the requirements of the buyer. In this case, the content of bound moisture can be up to 25-30%. Consequently, free moisture in thermally treated sapropel will be 15-20%.
Lowering the moisture content, it is important not to forget that together with removed from sapropel moisture is also removed part of the useful and nutritious substances. Therefore, it is not recommended to lower the total moisture content below 40-50%. Already at 40-50% moisture content sapropel is a dry dusty powder to the touch.

How much does sapropel weigh?
Depending on the water saturation, sapropel has different bulk density. Bulk density is the mass of the bulk material in the volume of free fill. The table shows the bulk density of sapropel depending on its moisture level.
